A new development of apartments near the Limehouse Cut is contributing toward the improvement of Bartlett Park. The three parties delivering the new homes – East Thames, Telford and Poplar Harca - are investing funds into upgrading the green space and play areas with new sports facilities. ‘The Dockyard’ is bringing 150 new homes to the area and features a waterside centre and café that will provide local children with access to canoeing facilities on the Cut.
The project forms part of East Thames’ wider plans for Tower Hamlets, which has already seen them invest over £250 million into new homes for the borough in the last five years.
In March of this year, the housing association started construction on the final phase of their highly ambitious regeneration of the Ocean Estate in Stepney Green. Three poorly designed blocks will be demolished to make way for 225 new homes for affordable rent and shared ownership. This £220 million project has already delivered 800 new homes and has completely transformed the Ocean Estate, which once sat in the top 10% of the most deprived estates in England. Boris Johnson recently named the regenerated estate as the best new place to live in the Mayor of London’s 2015 London Planning Awards.
This September residents on the New Union Wharf estate in the Isle of Dogs will move into their brand new homes. The residents have remained on site whilst an intensive regeneration plan is executed by East Thames; replacing the 189 homes originally built in the 1970s with 399 high quality new apartments. The second phase of new homes for sale and rent will be available in 2017.
This extensive development work across the borough is not only providing affordable homes for local people but work opportunities too. Over 35 apprentices were employed on the Ocean Estate site and over 55 unemployed people from the borough achieved construction qualifications through the East Thames ‘Construct Your Career’ programme.
