A back-up package that leads the way

// the building envelope

Offering the best to your clients is not just about having a great product range; Jon Stevenson, Marketing Manager of James Jones & Son, one of the largest timber processing groups in the UK, tells HA that excellent technical back-up is an essential part of the package.

How can I calculate what JJI-Joists I need?
Our authorised distributors offer an estimating and design service inclusive of JJI-Joist layout plans, engineering calculations and material costings. Our Interactive Span Tables are a quick web-based interface to let you find a suitable product for a simple floor project. This tool is not a substitute for the excellent technical advice and design service available from our distributors, but is a useful starting point.

What about more experienced designers?
Our JJI-Joist software is purpose-designed to allow architects to specify and incorporate JJI-Joists with ease and complete confidence.
The correct selection of suitable, compatible metalwork can make a big difference to the quality and cost of a JJI-Joist structure. Without the use of design software, this process tends to be laborious and time consuming. Fortunately for the designer, we have developed comprehensive, in-house, layout and engineering programmes to do the hard work

How can I produce detailed calculations myself?
For quick initial sizing through to detailed analysis of complex load configurations, JoistMaster is a single member design program that is available for free and is aimed at a wide range of user abilities from  professional structural or civil engineers and architects, to students and individuals interested in self-build. JoistMaster produces detailed calculation output that is ideally formatted for submission to Building Control and other interested parties.
For use by our national network of trained JJI-Joist distributors, FloorMaster is a computer aided design program capable of producing fully detailed JJI-Joist layout drawings for use on site. FloorMaster is not available to the general public because of the level of training required, but by passing your design queries onto one of our distributors they can use it to quickly generate the best solution for your project. The output from FloorMaster can be exported to OptiMaster, our stock optimisation program, to allow the distributor to maximise their cutting efficiency and therefore offer you the best possible solution.

Will this mean my designs are BIM compliant?
The FloorMaster software used by our distributors is able to output the final, fully engineered layout to a 3 dimensional, data rich IFC file format that can be utilised in a full building model for projects, using the BIM approach.

What if I need on-site technical back-up?
Our highly skilled and experienced sales and technical team complements these tools to allow us to offer some of the finest technical support in the industry. Our experienced Technical Sales Team provide cover for the whole of the UK, supporting our distributors, architects, engineers and end clients. Their detailed knowledge of our products and their end use, combined with a good understanding of modern construction processes and regulations, equips them well to provide you with the help you need to get your project done.
The Timber Systems Design and Technical Office provides a central hub for high level engineering support, with experienced full time designers and engineers. As well as providing software, design and engineering advice, the Design Office prepares and maintains technical literature and develops new products and systems as part of the on-going R&D effort.
“Our job doesn't stop when the truck leaves the factory gate,” stated General Manager of the James Jones Timber System Division, Angus Macfarlane. “We make JJI-Joists to be the very best we can, but a vital part of the JJI-Joist system is the resource we put into software, design and engineering technical support, both factory-based and out in the field.”

JJI-Joists are not just for floors!
More and more architects and builders are recognising that using JJI-Joists to construct walls and roofs gives them the opportunity to maximise the insulation they are able to incorporate into a building. The shape of the JJI-Joist, with its 9mm OSB web means that cold bridging is reduced and the wide choice of joist depths make it easy to choose a specification that meets the specific design requirement to suit the building and location. This is particularly useful in Passivhaus projects.
