Strength and depth in a sustainable supply chain

// the building envelope

The opening of a new state-of-the-art factory in Fife to manufacture high performance door-sets represents the next important phase in the development and growth of CMS Window Systems, as it expands capacity to keep pace with ever growing demand. Its creation is testament to a business strategy that dovetails with the goals of social housing providers, built around the pillars of social, environmental and economic sustainability.

Established in Castlecary near Glasgow in 2006, CMS Window Systems has grown to become one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and installers of PVC and aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling, employing more than 250 people. It is not your typical fenestration business, however, being a pioneer in everything from the recycling of old frames – whatever their material – and glass, to its commitment to creating youth employment, adopting the Living Wage and a broad CSR programme which supports the vital work of many local and national charities.
The business continues to go from strength to strength with an order book valued at £65m over the next three years, and another recent milestone being its record single contract win for aluminium fenestration for the prestigious Atlantic Square commercial development in Glasgow. The new 8,500 sq. ft. factory in Kirkcaldy provides crucial new production facilities, plus enhancements to its long-established recycling plant in the Fife town. A full range of door-sets will be manufactured here, including 30 and 60 minute fire-rated doors, with PVC, timber and aluminium framing to accommodate any mix of housing stock, schools, hospitals and other non-residential buildings.
A loyal and growing customer base in the social housing sector, however, remains the foundation of CMS Window Systems, which is one of the key drivers for the opening of its new factory dedicated to door-set production. As an active supporter of the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA) and APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence), the company has a thorough understanding of the window and door demands of social housing managers. This is illustrated by that fact that CMS Window Systems is the preferred supplier on Scotland Excel’s latest Energy Efficiency framework as a provider of replacement windows and doors for local authority and housing association stock across Scotland.

Quality, traceability and warrantied long term assurance
The refined manufacturing and QA processes that have proved so effective at Castlecary have been replicated at Kirkcaldy to ensure all products are manufactured to the highest standard for a truly ‘fit and forget’ solution. But that’s only part of what is necessary to provide social housing landlords like Fife Council and North Lanarkshire Council with long term assurance.
CMS Window Systems adopts a ‘belt and braces’ approach to ensuring that window and door contracts are delivered safely, on time and to the highest quality standards through its unique CMS Site Auditor programme. This technology based system provides total visibility on a contract from end-to-end, giving easy access to detailed reports on installation project progress, and enables remote installation teams to report in detail about the condition of a property before, during and after installation. This includes daily health and safety audits to ensure the wellbeing of staff and householders is being maintained.
This comprehensive level of monitoring and reporting gives CMS customers clear traceability on every window and door installation, should any issues ever arise. And the fact that CMS as a business is economically sustainable with a bright future ahead, gives confidence in the validity and value of warranties to cover future call-backs.

Proven tenant satisfaction focus too
Another important dimension to the CMS Site Auditor programme is its ease in capturing tenant feedback and satisfaction. A customer survey is conducted on completion at every property, and this information can then be shared with housing managers in a format that integrates with their own reporting processes and KPIs.
CMS Window Systems is excelling in its tenant satisfaction ratings. Over the last 12 months, across all its residential installations, it has an approval rating of over 98%. This reflects its commitment to quality throughout every contract and the attention to detail of its manufacturing and installation teams.
