Having identified an acute need for affordable, single storey dwellings for people over 60 Greenwich Council was granted funding to construct 35 new dwellings on eight small sites across the borough.
The homes, designed by Bell Phillips Architects, feature prominent use of brick and zinc and have standing seam, monopitch VMZINC® PLUS roofs in PIGMENTO® RED. The distinctive zinc-clad elevation rises 1.5 metres above the brickwork to create a saw tooth profile and an extensive glazing span which enhances natural light and space. The project was commissioned to develop a model for public housing and has so far won RIBA National and London Awards and been commended in the 2016 Blueprint and Sunday Times British Homes Awards. The RIBA London Jury considered the design to “provide innovative, generous, and light-filled homes that bring joy to their occupants and new life to the bungalow building type”.
