Classified A1 Aluminium Cladding Solution

Submitted by Kate on

The Birchett Road project in Aldershot involved the recladding of an existing building, delivering a high-performance, non-combustible aluminium cladding solution to upgrade fire safety, durability, and longterm façade performance. Situated within a prominent town centre location, the scheme required an external wall solution that would meet current regulatory expectations while also improving the visual coherence and consistency of the building elevations.

As with many refurbishment projects, the replacement of the existing external materials presented an opportunity not only to enhance aesthetics, but also to significantly improve the safety and resilience of the building envelope. The recladding strategy was therefore driven by a requirement for a compliant, robust and low-maintenance system capable of delivering demonstrable improvements in reaction to fire performance and longterm durability.

claddingThe project scope included the supply and installation of over 560m² of Vitradual solid aluminium cladding panels, finished in 3mm Cool Grey. Vitradual was selected as part of the recladding solution due to its suitability for refurbishment applications, offering a fully noncombustible construction combined with a durable aluminium finish capable of withstanding longterm exposure in a busy urban environment.

Installation was carried out by Vertec Ltd, acting as the main contractor for the project. The panels were installed using a rivet-fixed system, incorporating colour-matched VitraFix rivets to achieve a consistent and refined visual finish across the side elevations and upper levels of the building. This fixing method provides a mechanically secure solution while supporting straightforward installation, accurate alignment and clear visual inspection of fixings
on site.

From a construction and maintenance perspective, the rivet-fixed approach offers practical advantages for refurbishment projects. The system supports repeatable installation quality, reduced complexity during installation, and ease of future inspection or replacement if required. These factors contribute to improved longterm façade management and overall building lifecycle performance.

The completed recladding scheme delivers a crisp, contemporary external appearance that enhances the building’s presence within its towncentre setting. The consistent Cool Grey finish unifies the elevations, while the clean panel layout and precise fixing detail contribute to a modernised façade that complements its surroundings. Crucially, these visual improvements are matched by significant upgrades in fire performance and durability.

The Vitradual solid aluminium cladding system was specified for the Birchett Road reclad due to its suitability for projects where fire safety, regulatory compliance and longterm performance are critical considerations. Vitradual panels are Classified A1 in accordance with EN 135011, providing a fully non-combustible reaction to fire performance. This classification supports compliance with current UK building regulations and guidance relating to external wall construction, particularly for refurbishment and recladding projects where the replacement materials must clearly improve upon the original façade
build up.

Beyond fire performance, Vitradual offers a well-engineered rainscreen cladding solution aligned with CWCT-recognised design principles. The system supports effective façade drainage, ventilation and thermal movement, helping to manage moisture and maintain longterm structural integrity across the building envelope. These design considerations are particularly important in refurbishment settings, where existing substrates and tolerances must be accommodated without compromising performance.

The system is supported by established technical assessment processes, with aluminium rainscreen systems such as Vitradual subject to BBA-recognised testing frameworks and independent performance evaluation. This provides additional confidence regarding factors such as weather resistance, durability and whole-life façade performance, helping project teams make informed, compliant specification decisions.

By combining Classified A1 non-combustibility, proven rainscreen system design and durable aluminium construction, Vitradual was a strong choice for the Birchett Road recladding project. The completed scheme delivers a compliant, resilient and visually cohesive external wall solution, providing long-term value and enhanced safety for a prominent town centre refurbishment.
