Vent-Axia helps social housing providers reduce plastic waste
With over 1 million tonnes of plastic going to landfill every year in the UK alone, industry-leading ventilation company Vent-Axia is helping social housing providers reduce their environmental impact by designing modular products to reduce plastic waste. By carefully considering the design of its products, Vent-Axia’s latest energy efficient fans are even easier to repair and recycle, reducing carbon footprints and helping make ventilation even more cost effective for social housing providers.
In the past many manufacturers have recommended that if a fan has a fault it should be replaced. Not only is this expensive when the fan has exceeded its warranty period, but a lot of unnecessary waste is sent to landfill. Vent-Axia has now tackled this issue head on designing fans, such as the Lo-Carbon Revive, which have individual modular components that can all be replaced separately. So, if a Lo-Carbon Revive develops a fault it’s likely that a new spare part can be easily ordered, avoiding paying for a completely new fan. This considerably reduces the amount of plastic waste and, should the exterior of the unit require replacing, all Lo-Carbon Revive fans are made with recyclable ABS plastic.
Plastic waste reduction commitment
“We are working hard to help social housing providers reduce their environmental impact, and make cost savings, by developing innovative products that can be repaired rather than replaced should they develop a fault” explains Tom Wodcke, Product Marketing Manager at Vent-Axia. “The Lo-Carbon Revive is a great example of this and recently won the Innovative Product category at the prestigious EEM Building Communities Awards 2019. But it’s not just new products that are repairable. At Vent-Axia we’re well known for our long-standing spares department which has a wide range of parts available allowing products to be repaired whenever possible.”
The Revive is just one of Vent-Axia’s modular products that offer landlords cost and plastic waste savings. Vent-Axia’s new innovative Lo-Carbon PoziDry Compact Pro Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) unit is the latest modular product and features a removable inner cartridge making installation and maintenance a breeze. With all the critical components of the unit located on one central and easy to replace cartridge, repairs and replacement are made easy. Installers simply unplug and remove the central cartridge, leaving the ductwork and back plate intact. This means the ductwork, wiring and mounting are left undisturbed during re-installation so the decorative condition of the home is left untouched. By only replacing the inner cartridge there is less plastic waste and less fuel for shipping, thus lowering the installation’s carbon footprint.
These moves by Vent-Axia follow on from the reshoring of the balance of its domestic fan manufacturing, from China back to the UK which in 2013. This commitment to British manufacturing has seen Vent-Axia further investing in UK logistics which has helped lower the embodied energy of products by reducing carbon emissions. A reduction in international shipping and flights has resulted in a saving of up to 15 Tonnes of CO² a year.
In addition, in 2016 Vent-Axia was recognised for its commitment to environmental excellence having achieved the internationally recognised ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification for its Crawley manufacturing facilities.
