IAQ is heating up!

Johnson & Starley offer a complete range of energy-efficient solutions for heating and ventilating - from the smallest house to the biggest blocks of flats - ensuring a warm, healthy home with excellent indoor air quility (IAQ) and a clear conscience!

Johnson & Starley’s LE155 whole-house ventilation systems with heat recovery are playing a major role in the refurbishment of social housing within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Over 70 units have been installed within the kitchens of apartments in Hazlewood Tower to provide an energy-efficient means of ventilating the properties, preventing condensation and combating the problem of mould growth which affects so many properties of this type built in the 1960s.

IAQ is heating up!

The LE155 heat recovery units are replacing the original Johnson & Starley ventilation systems installed in the mid-1980s which have given excellent service. The dwellings within Hazlewood Towers were originally under attack from condensation and mould growth, caused when moisture from the bathroom and kitchen migrates to the coldest part
of the dwelling, including the walls, resulting in the visible effect of wallpaper peeling away. This was eliminated by the installation of the original
HR150 units.

Remove airborne particulate

The new LE155 Low Energy units have been installed in the kitchens above the cooker. Stale, moisture-laden air is extracted from the bathroom through a grille and then taken through encased ductwork into the LE155 unit. It also takes in the moisture and smells generated by cooking directly from the kitchen. This air is passed across a heat exchanger to remove the heat and the residue is exhausted to the atmosphere through an external grille on the apartment’s balcony. Fresh filtered supply air, with airborne particulate removed, is drawn across the heat exchanger and redistributed back into the apartment through grilles in dry rooms, including the lounge and bedroom.
The LE155 units are SAP Appendix Q listed and incorporate Energy Efficient EC Fans so their specification is in accordance with Kensington and Chelsea TMO’s drive to provide more energy-efficient solutions for tenants and reduce the borough’s carbon footprint. The JS6 remote dual control switch can be set to boost when occupants are generating more moisture through cooking or showering. In the summer mode the LE155 can be used for extracting moisture only but in the winter can also be used to bring in external air for heating too.

Low sound levels

The units cost as little as 2-3p per day to run and provide tenants with a cleaner healthy living environment. Another attraction for the occupants is the extremely low sound levels during operation.
Installation of each LE155 unit takes S&F Services just one working day and causes very little disruption to the majority of tenants with old units swapped for new with minimal remedial repairs, and servicing of the LE units can be undertaken at the same time as the properties’ gas boilers are serviced

Full condense technology

While Johnson & Starley’s entire QuanTec range of high-efficiency boilers feature Sermeta ‘Cool Door’ Isothermic stainless steel heat exchangers, the HR28C model additionally incorporates full condense technology; offering efficiencies not previously achieved in the industry.
The integral Passive Flue Gas Heat Recovery unit serves to preheat sanitary water to deliver performance standards some 25% above most water heaters on the market, meanwhile significantly lowering flue temperatures to the lowest possible level and thereby visibly reducing the pluming effect.
Despite this additional feature, the HR28C remains compact enough to provide a direct replacement for many wall-hung boilers, while the low weight and ease of connections make installation quick and straightforward. QuanTec further offers low NOx and advanced electronic control.
And in a further development, the QuanTec HR 28C (PFGHR - Passive Flue Gas Heat Recovery) gas version can now be specified as a combined package with the Aquair Heating Interface Unit (HIU).

Easy installation

For homeowners and installers who want to replace an old centralised heating system - especially warm air - this combination is ideal as it can make use of existing warm air ducting for easy installation. Furthermore, a highly attractive five-year guarantee is offered that covers both products.  Extra benefits such as summer air circulation and optional electronic air cleaning, are very appealing too.
Indeed, in general terms, the installation of an Aquair HIU linked to a combi boiler is a highly efficient and cost-effective solution. Saving space and making substantial savings in CO2 emissions, gas consumption is also significantly reduced.
HIUs can provide solutions for many different types of building; Johnson & Starley is well placed to meet the requirements of installers and specifiers through quick design and the delivery of fully customised HIUs to meet individual project requirements.

A variety of combinations

The Aquair range of HIUs offer a water to air solution to provide warm air heating whilst the Aqua HIU is an individually specified product that is available in a variety of combinations of DHW and heat, with or without storage.  With the introduction of the new downflow only Aquair S-25 (25kW) and S-36 (36kW) models to complement existing up and downflow 10, 16 and 20kW versions, larger premises can now benefit from the higher output. This HIU can be used in conjunction with both a warm air heating and an existing wet system.
There can be substantial benefits with decentralised systems that include HIUs. These district heating systems are attractive from an energy-efficiency and environmental standpoint, particularly with the availability of renewable heating technologies such as air and ground source heat pumps, thermal solar, solar PV and biomass.
Johnson & Starley provides specialist advice on the correct specification of HIUs for decentralised applications and has extensive experience in this field of expertise.
